Czechoslovakia played an important role within the Soviet bloc, yet its history remains under-researched. This monograph blends historical analysis of the superpowers’ foreign policies with an assessment of their impact on Czechoslovakia and its position within the Soviet bloc. The book thereby places Czechoslovakia on the map of Cold War history, i.e. the era of “mutually assured destruction” that lasted almost half a century. It provides a lucid introduction to some milestones in international Cold War history in their relation to Czecho-Slovak history.
The book’s novel contribution is to explain Czechoslovakia’s domestic situation during the Cold War from the “outside”. Drawing on extensive source materials of Slovak, Czech, American, and Russian provenance, it provides a more comprehensive understanding of post-war Czecho-Slovak history while also contributing to general knowledge about the nature and impact of the Cold War.

James’s, and Derek Walcott’s representations of Toussaint L’Ouverture and the Haitian Revolution, the textual analyses approach the issues of colonial mimicry, postcolonial nationalism, and postcoloniality in light of recent reconsiderations of the universal and the particular in critical theories, and psychoanalytic conceptions of trauma, identity, and jouissance. Hsiao argues that postcolonial intellectuals’ characteristic celebration of the Particular, together with their nuanced denunciation of the postcolonial nation and the Revolution, doesn’t really do away with the category of the Universal, nor twist free of the problematic of the logics of difference/equivalence that sustains the “living on” of the nation-state, despite an ever expanding globality; rather, such a postcolonial phenomenon is symptomatic of a disavowed traumatic event that mirrors and prefigures the predicament of the postcolonial experience while invoking its simulacra and further struggles centuries later.

In early 2014, sparked by an assault by their government on peaceful students, Ukrainians rose up against a deeply corrupt, Moscow-backed regime. When Russia invaded—illegally annexing Crimea and then feeding continuous military conflict in the Donbas—, Ukrainians responded with a massive volunteer effort and touching patriotism. In the process, they transformed their country, the region, and indeed the world.
This book provides a chronicle of Ukraine’s Maidan and Russia’s ongoing war, and puts forth an analysis of the Revolution of Dignity from the perspective of a participant observer.

Vor mehr als 10.000 Jahren sind in Europa k?nstliche unterirdische Gangnetze geschaffen worden, die im 16. Jahrhundert aus bisher ungekl?rten Gr?nden wieder verschlossen und versiegelt wurden. Nur wenige ?berreste, heute meist als «Erdst?lle» benannt, blieben zug?nglich. Erst vor wenigen Jahren konnten in der Steiermark die Zug?nge zu den unterirdischen Anlagen aus der Vorzeit offengelegt werden, die vermutlich die wahren «Tore zur Unterwelt» sind.
Mehrere Hundert unterirdische Anlagen wurden in der Oststeiermark bereits erforscht und teilweise wissenschaftlich bearbeitet. Untersuchungen der Karl-Franzens-Universit?t in Graz und der PURDUE-Universit?t in den USA errechneten durch TCN-Datierungen ein Richtalter von ?ber 10.000 Jahren f?r diese Anlagen. Dabei handelt es sich nicht um ein regional begrenztes Ph?nomen. In Nieder?sterreich haben Privatpersonen unter der Altstadt von Klosterneuburg mehrere unterirdische Anlagen in der Gr??e von hunderten Quadratmetern freigelegt, die teilweise auf ein Mindestalter von 8.500 Jahren datiert werden konnten. Diese unterirdischen R?ume wurden, wie arch?ologische Funde belegen, vom Neolithikum bis zur R?merzeit von Menschen regelm??ig genutzt und im 16. Jahrhundert vom Augustiner Chorherrenstift Klosterneuburg – wie auch die unterirdischen Anlagen rund um das Augustiner Chorherrenstift Vorau in der Oststeiermark – systematisch verschlossen und mit tausenden Tonnen Gestein verf?llt. Aus welchen Gr?nden ist das geschehen? Warum ist das Wissen um ihre Existenz verloren gegangen und sind wichtige Handschriften aus dem Mittelalter und der Neuzeit vor der ?ffentlichkeit bewahrt worden?
