Al principio se expresó con una simplicidad persuasiva, sin la menor suficiencia, sin pretensión alguna por ser elocuente ni patético. Se diría que estaba charlando con unos cuantos amigos íntimos. Tenía una voz fuerte y agradable, en la que se percibían la sinceridad y la espontaneidad. A very commonplace idea occurs to me at this point: What if that pestle had not been in sight, had not been lying on the shelf from which it was snatched by the prisoner, but had been put away in a cupboard? It would not have caught the prisoner's eye, and he would have run away without a weapon, with empty hands, and then he would certainly not have killed anyone. How then can I look upon the pestle as a proof of premeditation? Ello se debe a que el acusado vela este peligro como algo remoto, y a él sólo le preocupan las cosas presentes. Sin duda, lo consideraba como una cosa irreal. Pero, de pronto, comprende que el reciente engaño de su amada procede del hecho de que el nuevo rival no es un mero capricho para ella, sino toda su esperanza y toda su vida, y entonces, al comprender esto, se resigna. His language was perhaps more irregular than Ippolit Kirillovitch's, but he spoke without long phrases, and indeed, with more precision. But no doubt it was so. I only know that the witnesses for the prosecution were called first. I repeat I don't intend to describe all the questions step by step. Besides, my account would be to some extent superfluous, because in the speeches for the prosecution and for the defence the whole course of the evidence was brought together and set in a strong and significant light, and I took down parts of those two remarkable speeches in full, and will quote them in due course, together with one extraordinary and quite unexpected episode, which occurred before the final speeches, and undoubtedly influenced the sinister and fatal outcome of the trial. I will only observe that from the first moments of the trial one peculiar characteristic of the case was conspicuous and observed by all, that is, the overwhelming strength of the prosecution as compared with the arguments the defence had to rely upon. Antes de entrar en la sala mencionaremos ciertos hechos que llamaron la atención de todos. Se sabía el interés que había despertado este juicio, la impaciencia con que se le esperaba, las discusiones y conjeturas que venía provocando desde hacia dos meses. No se ignoraba tampoco que el asunto era conocido en toda Rusia. Pero nadie esperaba que hubiera despertado un interés tan extraordinario fuera de nuestra localidad.
