But we all, myself included, looked upon the soldiers in our service as cattle. I was perhaps worse than the rest in that respect, for I was so much more impressionable than my companions. By the time we left the school as officers, we were ready to lay down our lives for the honour of the regiment, but no one of us had any knowledge of the real meaning of honour, and if anyone had known it, he would have been the first to ridicule it. Drunkenness, debauchery and devilry were what we almost prided ourselves on. I don't say that we were bad by nature, all these young men were good fellows, but they behaved badly, and I worst of all. What made it worse for me was that I had come into my own money, and so I flung myself into a life of pleasure, and plunged headlong into all the recklessness of youth. I was fond of reading, yet strange to say, the Bible was the one book I never opened at that time, though I always carried it about with me, and I was never separated from it; in very truth I was keeping that book "for the day and the hour, for the month and the year," though I knew it not. After four years of this life, I chanced to be in the town of K. where our regiment was stationed at the time. We found the people of the town hospitable, rich, and fond of entertainments. I met with a cordial reception everywhere, as I was of a lively temperament and was known to be well off, which always goes a long way in the world. Часть текста: scarcely remain indifferent to such a question as that of white slavery in Russia[1]. White slavery in Russia has been too little attacked: perhaps because it has not been defended with the fierce tenacity of Transatlantic slaveholders. For it is to be remarked, that although many of the rich landholders in Russia passionately desire the maintenance of serfdom, no one is found to justify the institution ‒ no one to undertake its defence: not even the government. It is nevertheless a question of capital importance. Indeed, the whole Russian Question, for the present at least, may be said to be included in that of serfdom. Russia cannot make a step in advance until she has abolished slavery. The serfdom of the Russian peasant is the servitude of the Russian empire. The political and social existence of Western Europe formerly was concentrated in châteaux and in cities. It was essentially an aristocratic, or municipal existence. The peasant remained outside of the movement. The revolution took little thought of him. The sale of national property had no effect upon his condition, except to create a limited provincial bourgeoisie. Часть текста: from his bed a quarter of an hour before Alyosha's arrival; his visitors had gathered together in his cell earlier, waiting for him to wake, having received a most confident assurance from Father Paissy that "the teacher would get up, and as he had himself promised in the morning, converse once more with those dear to his heart." This promise and indeed every word of the dying elder Father Paissy put implicit trust in. If he had seen him unconscious, if he had seen him breathe his last, and yet had his promise that he would rise up and say good-bye to him, he would not have believed perhaps even in death, but would still have expected the dead man to recover and fulfil his promise. In the morning as he lay down to sleep, Father Zossima had told him positively: "I shall not die without the delight of another conversation with you, beloved of my heart. I shall look once more on your dear face and pour out my heart to you once again." The monks, who had gathered for this probably last conversation with Father Zossima, had all been his devoted friends for many years. There were four of them: Father Iosif and Father Paissy, Father Mihail the warden of the hermitage, a man not very old and far from being learned. He was of humble origin, of strong will and steadfast faith, of austere appearance, but of deep tenderness, though he obviously concealed it as though he were almost ashamed of it. Часть текста: but scantily read in modern history who does not know that Bakunin was condemned to death in Saxony and in Austria for the revolution of Dresden and for his participation in the affairs of Prague. If he were serving to-day as a soldier in the Caucasus, that condition would be the continuation of his sufferings; but we consider ourselves better informed than «F. M.», in representing that he languishes in the dungeons of St. -Petersburg. In 1847, Mr. Bakunin was expelled from France by M. Guizot for having, on the anniversary of the Polish revolution, called Nicholas «the assassin and the executioner of Poland». «F. M.» ought to know that Russian agents are not authorised to employ such expressions, and he had only to refer to the reports of the sittings of the French Chamber of Deputies to bend himself before Bakunin, if political courage can inspire him with respect. The calumny which «F. M.» has raised is by no means new. Ever since there have been revolutionary Russians, there have been people calling them Russian agents, with a view to ruin them in public opinion. Проффера — их приложение к наиболее в тот момент [95] актуальному и сложному тексту Набокова. В 1973 г. эта статья была отдана Карлу Профферу, редактору журнала «Russian Literature Triquarterly», но не появилась в книге под его редакцией [96] и долго не появлялась в журнале. В конце концов, лет через пять она (т. е. только первая ее половина) была напечатана в № 14, на котором стояла дата 1976, но реально он вышел значительно позже [97] — и напечатана в искаженном виде. Во-первых, анонимно, во-вторых — пропала вторая половина статьи [98] . Я написал язвительное (или, может быть, просто злобное) предисловие, в котором обвинил редактора во всех смертных грехах, включая плагиат [99] , и скандальное письмо, в котором грозил напечатать статью с этим предисловием [100] . Действия это не возымело, и вспоминая тогдашние почтовые «оказии» (а эта переписка была к тому же и небезопасной), я не могу быть уверен даже в том, получил ли мои послания адресат. L.» не декларировала явных тематич. или методологич. предпочтений, в целом журнал на нач. этапе оказался ориентирован в осн. на «московско-тартускую структурно-семиотическую школу», а также восприятие и развитие идей М. М. Бахтина. Одним из гл. науч. направлений в деятельности «R. L.» стало изучение акмеизма и, в частности, худож. наследия О. М. В 1974 в «R. L.» (№ 7/8) Н. И. Харджиев впервые опубликовал рец. О. М. «К выходу “Альманаха муз”» (1916), а в 1977 (Vol. V. № 2) Ю. Л. Фрейдин - мандельшт. кинорец. «Шпигун» (1929) и (также впервые) заметку <«О Чехове»> (1935). Тогда же А. Г. Мец и В. Н. Сажин опубликовали неск. шуточных мандельшт. стихотворений (Там же), а в 1984 (Vol. XV. № 1) - ряд материалов (часть из них - впервые), связанных с переводч. деятельностью О. М. В 1977 в «R. L.» (Vol. 5. № 3) Б. Янгфельдт впервые напечатал два поздних мандельшт. текста - «Мир начинался страшен и велик...» и «С примесью ворона голуби...». К сер. 1970-х гг. в журнале...

Разумеется, не Герцен пояснял свой текст французскими словами в скобках; это делала редакция «The Leader», очевидно, заимствуя эти слова из находившегося в ее распоряжении французского перевода. Часть текста: and this contempt for the monk is growing. It is true, alas, it is true, that there are many sluggards, gluttons, profligates, and insolent beggars among monks. Educated people point to these: "You are idlers, useless members of society, you live on the labour of others, you are shameless beggars." And yet how many meek and humble monks there are, yearning for solitude and fervent prayer in peace! These are less noticed, or passed over in silence. And how suprised men would be if I were to say that from these meek monks, who yearn for solitary prayer, the salvation of Russia will come perhaps once more! For they are in truth made ready in peace and quiet "for the day and the hour, the month and the year." Meanwhile, in their solitude, they keep the image of Christ fair and undefiled, in the purity of God's truth, from the times of the Fathers of old, the Apostles and the martyrs. And when the time comes they will show it to the tottering creeds of the world. That is a great thought. That star will rise out of the East. That is my view of the monk, and is it false? Is it too proud? Look at the worldly and all who set themselves up above the people of God; has not God's image and His truth been distorted in them? They have science; but in science there is nothing but what is the object of sense. The spiritual world, the higher part of man's being is rejected altogether, dismissed with a sort of triumph, even with hatred. The world has proclaimed the reign of freedom, especially of late, but what do we see in this freedom of theirs? Nothing but slavery and self-destruction! For the world...
